Spring Training and the Big Blowout

Last week, I traveled to Phoenix to go to Mariners Spring Training. Granddaughter Emma and I traveled together, and we met Katie, coming from Hawaii, and Emma’s boyfriend Zack, coming from New York. We had a great AirBnB near the Mariners’ stadium and got to go to 3 games. They won the first, lost the second and made a dramatic comeback to win the third game. We had a fun time, not only watching baseball and soaking up the sun, but also playing putt-putt golf, going to the casino and driving around GCU, where Emma went to college. One of the best parts of this phase of the trip was getting to know Zack. I had met him twice before, but not in a setting conducive to one-on-one conversation. He is a very interesting young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and lots of plans!

My new hat – sticker shock on the price!

After a few days at the AirBnB, we split up. Katie went home, I went to visit cousin Bill and his wife, Sue, and Emma and Zack went to stay with some of Zack’s friends. (He also went to college in Phoenix.) I had not seen Bill and Sue for several years, so it was great to catch up and get to know their current dog, Mickey. Emma and I met to fly home, and since this was right in the middle of the East coast blizzard, Zack extended his stay a few days. I assume he has managed to get home by now!

I owe a big thank you to Leslie and my neighbors Matt and Sonya for taking care of Finnegan while I was gone. Finnegan got sick for the last couple of days that I was gone.  Matt and Sonya had volunteered to walk him on Tuesday, but at the last minute we needed them Monday as well. They walked in to find that Finnegan had a bad case of the trots (or as my dad used to refer to it, the “green apple quickstep”). They cleaned it up and turned the dogs over to Leslie when she got home from work. She spent 2 days doing major cleanups all over my house and eventually took Finnegan to the vet. They didn’t know what caused the problem, but it could have been stress from my absence. I need to think more about how to handle my trip to Sweden.

This weekend I have a ham radio swap meet and Leslie’s 50th birthday party. I’m glad I finally got my Christmas tree taken down last weekend!

That’s all for now, folks!

  1. What a great trip! Thanks for sharing, cousin Rich!
So sorry about Finnegan. Hoping for no repeats of illness.

  2. Sounds like a great time with everyone! Baseball is so much fun and sharing it is even better when they WIN! Sad to hear about the pup as they too experience some effects when we are gone. Perhaps enroll him into a play group so he feels like he gets to go on vacation too!
P.S. Keep us on your list as we love to hear about all your adventures!
